The Welsh Liberal Democrats have launched their proposal for the Mid Wales Growth deal at a public meeting and Q&A in Welshpool. The proposal was launched by Liberal Democrat Leader Vince Cable and Welsh Liberal Democrat leader Jane Dodds.
The UK Government announced in last November’s budget that they were open to proposals for a Mid Wales Growth Deal. This would follow the City Deals for the Cardiff Capital and Swansea Bay Regions and the proposed North Wales Growth Deal currently being negotiated.
The Mid Wales Growth Deal is a once in a generation opportunity to revolutionise Mid Wales and its economy. The deal agreed between the UK Government, Welsh Government and Local Authorities must be a bold plan to develop Mid Wales’ infrastructure, support businesses in the region and prepare the Mid Wales economy for the technological advancements of years to come.
The Welsh Liberal Democrats have revealed their proposals for an ambitious Mid Wales Growth Deal that transforms the Mid Wales economy and addresses the unique needs of Mid Wales. Our proposal focuses on improving transport and digital infrastructure, furthering the support available to our agricultural, manufacturing and tourism industries, improving the region’s skills base, developing our research and innovation sectors, supporting businesses to increase exports and making it easier to set up and run businesses.
We call on all those involved in the Mid Wales Growth Deal to follow our lead and give Mid Wales the ambitious growth deal it needs to secure economic growth, high-quality jobs and prosperity. Another half-baked strategy that does nothing to tackle the core challenges facing Mid Wales will not be good enough. Mid Wales deserves a plan that transforms the region and ensures opportunity for Mid Wales and all who live in it.
