William Powell AM, Welsh Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Rural Affairs, has today reiterated the need for the Welsh Government to support farmers in the Welsh Uplands amid fears that the Welsh Labour Government's decisions on CAP reform will make many Upland farms unsustainable.
William Powell AM, Mid and West Wales, said:
"Throughout the CAP reform process, I have stressed the importance of the Uplands to Welsh agriculture and the role it plays at the very centre of the Welsh Lamb Industry.
"Farm incomes have been cut drastically as a result of the Welsh Labour Government's decision to abandon unilaterally Uplands support within the EU and also to modulate the full 15% of Direct Payments to Pillar 2 of the CAP.
"In recent months I have been contacted by many farmers across Mid and West Wales who fear that the Welsh Labour Government is going to drive them out of businesses.
"This is why it is essential that the RDP places the Welsh Uplands at its heart and ensure that Wales' most disadvantaged areas get the full package of support they need to ensure that the Welsh Lamb industry can survive and maintain the global status - and reputation for excellence - it has worked so hard to achieve."
