Liberal Democrat Leader Vince Cable has urged the UK Government to immediately give the go-ahead for the Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon to kickstart a series of lagoons across the UK, including at Newport, Cardiff and Colwyn Bay.
Alongside Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader Jane Dodds, Vince Cable visited Cardiff Bay, the proposed site of the Cardiff Lagoon and met Tidal Lagoon Power, the company behind the proposed lagoons.
They heard how the Swansea Tidal Lagoon would work as a pathfinder for the new industry and unlock a series of larger and more efficient lagoons. These lagoons offer long-term, reliable, cost-effective and green power, power that will only become cheaper as the technology is developed further.
The lagoons would also have substantial economic benefits for Wales and the UK. Tidal Lagoon Power have already identified suppliers in case the projects are given the go-ahead, with a substantial majority operating in the UK. The lagoons would provide a massive economic stimulus to South Wales whilst making Wales a world-leader in tidal energy.
The Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon is wholeheartedly supported by the Hendry Review, local businesses and Assembly Members from all parties. It fits perfectly with the aims laid out in the Government’s Industrial Strategy and Clean Growth Strategy. It is time the Government stopped dithering and gave this crucial project the go-ahead.
As Brexit draws closer, it is more important than ever the UK Government invests in Wales and that Wales is presented as an innovative, open and dynamic country that is open for business.
