The Welsh Liberal Democrats urgently call on the Welsh Government to consider bringing forward payments from the BPS (Basic Payment Scheme) to alleviate financial hardship resulting from the ongoing drought.
This follows calls from NFU Cymru and FUW for an emergency summit with the Welsh Government to urgently consider bringing forward payments from the BPS.
Welsh Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Agriculture Cllr William Powell said:
"The ongoing drought continues to cause real hardship for Welsh farmers, it is incumbent on the Welsh Government to do all it can to alleviate this hardship.
We wholeheartedly endorse the calls from NFU Cymru and FUW for an emergency summit with the Welsh Government on bringing Basic Payments forward."
Welsh Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Rural Affairs Mark Williams commented:
"Without the proper assistance, this drought will have a devastating impact on Welsh farmers and their ability to survive. The consequences for rural communities do not bear thinking about."
