We cannot return to austerity

We need to be protecting those on the lowest incomes and ensuring those at the higher end contribute more.

Responding to a leaked Treasury report in the Daily Telegraph, which details proposals to freeze wages and increase taxes to pay for recent Government spending due to Covid-19, Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader Jane Dodds said:

“I am really concerned about reports the Conservatives plan to increase taxes and freeze wages in response to Covid-19.

“Our hard-working doctors & nurses deserve a pay rise, not another pay freeze and an even bigger tax bill. Is this really the way we want to thank them for all they have done to fight this pandemic?

“We cannot return to austerity. We need to ensure as we move out of lockdown and into this post-Covid world that we support people and prevent a huge squeeze on household income.

“We need to learn the lessons of the past and put them into practice as we move forward.  Our priorities need to be protecting those on the lowest incomes and ensuring those at the higher end contribute more.

“If the Treasury want to find a way to pay for their recent spending, then they should look to clamp down on tax avoidance, which sees the Treasury deprived of billions through legal loopholes and schemes.”
