The Welsh Liberal Democrats have welcomed today's announcement of a £500 bonus to be paid to care workers, calling for a similar reward to be given to all NHS and healthcare staff.

The announcement today will see almost 65,000 care workers in Wales given a £500 'thank you' payment from the Welsh Government for their continued service during the coronavirus outbreak.

The Welsh Liberal Democrats have previously called for all care workers to get an immediate 3% pay rise, as has happened in Scotland, and for the introduction of a Covid Service Reward of £29 a day, akin to the military deployment bonus, for all health and care workers.

Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader Jane Dodds said:

“Without selflessness and dedication of our health and care workers, we simply would not be able to continue to function during this pandemic. I am glad to see steps are finally being taken to recognise and reward their tireless service.

“However, this announcement does not go far enough. We need to be paying our care workers well all year round, not just when a crisis develops. We also need to ensure everyone in the NHS and our health sector are rewarded too.

“I urge the Welsh Govenment to roll out this 'thank you' payment to all those health and care staff who are working to defeat the Coronavirus. It's only fair all those pitching in on the frontlines get recognised and rewarded."
