This year, the Welsh Liberal Democrats used Pride Cymru 2018 to say that Trans rights are human rights.
“Transgender rights are human rights. There is no place for transphobia in a civilized society. The Welsh Liberal Democrats are proud to fight for a Wales that is open, tolerant and united. We believe in a Wales where everyone has the opportunity to live free from hate, bigotry and discrimination and we will not rest until this Wales is a reality." - Jane Dodds, Leader Welsh Liberal Democrats
In 1983 62% of adults thought that sexual relations between adults of the same sex was wrong. By 2012 this had dropped to 28%. We’ve come far on equality, rights and freedoms for the LGB community, but our trans brothers and sisters have been left behind.
Figures from Stonewall show that;
- More than a third of all transgender people in the UK were victims of a hate crime in 2017
- Four in five (79 per cent) of trans people do not report their crimes due to a perceived lack of support or fear of further discrimination.
- 48 per cent of trans people are scared to use public toilets.
- 25% said they were discriminated against when looking for a house or flat to rent or buy.
We’re calling for a Wales Charter for Trans rights so everyone can live free from hate, bigotry and discrimination.
We believe in a Wales that is open, tolerant and inclusive where each of us is free to be ourselves. Opportunity will be for all and no one will be held back by their upbringing, and our diversity is celebrated. Every aspect of our lives, our economy, our public services and our democratic institutions will be inclusive and accessible to all, responsive to the needs of every individual.
