The Welsh Liberal Democrats have urged MPs to vote down Theresa May’s deeply flawed Brexit deal in this evening’s meaningful vote.
As expected, Theresa May failed to get any changes to the Withdrawal Deal with the EU but the UK and the EU did agree a ‘joint instrument’ on the backstop.
The legal advice from Attorney General Geoffrey Cox stated that the joint instrument reduces the risk of the UK being held “indefinitely and involuntarily“ in the backstop but that “legal risk remains unchanged.”
Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader Jane Dodds commented:
Now the Attorney General’s legal advice shows no meaningful changes have been secured to the Irish Backstop, it is clear there is no chance of Theresa May’s deal gaining the support of the Commons this evening.
We urge MPs from across the house to vote down Theresa May’s deal this evening, firmly reject a no deal Brexit tomorrow and vote to extend Article 50 on Thursday.
Brexit is a national embarrassment. The only way to end this embarrassment is to give the people the final say on Brexit with the option to choose to remain in the EU.
