The Welsh Liberal Democrats have welcomed the announcement by the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Services that the Nurse Staffing Levels (Wales) Act will be implemented in full from today (6th April 2018).
The Nurse Staffing Levels (Wales) Act was a Private Member’s Bill introduced by Welsh Liberal Democrat Kirsty Williams in 2014. It received Royal Assent in 2016 following strong cross-party support and the backing of the nursing profession.
Councillor Bablin Molik, Welsh Liberal Democrat Health Spokesperson said:
The Nurse Staffing Levels Act is a ground-breaking piece of legislation, with Wales the first country in Europe to introduce legislation on safe nurse staffing levels. The full implementation of the Act will improve patient safety, give nurses the time they need to properly care for their patients and improve morale, retention and recruitment within the nursing profession.
Jane Dodds, Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats commented:
The Nurse Staffing Levels Act is one of the Welsh Liberal Democrats’ proudest achievements and further evidence of the positive difference just one Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member can make. It is a distinctly liberal Act that improves patient care by empowering nurses, not dictating to them. I look forward to working with colleagues to produce more effective, popular and liberal policies in the months and years to come.
