Commenting on the day the Education (Wales) Bill reaches Stage 3 proceedings in the Assembly, Aled Roberts, Welsh Liberal Democrat AM for North Wales and the party's spokesperson on Education, said:
"Today this Bill moves to being just one step away from becoming legislation, and I have tabled a number of amendments which I believe can improve its scope.
"The amendments are based on the unanimous recommendations of the Children, Young People and Education Committee after taking evidence from witnesses during Stage 1.
"It was extremely disappointing that all Labour members of the committee chose to vote against those recommendations when they were given that opportunity in January, but I am pursuing those objectives once again in Plenary today.
"I am particularly keen to see that the independence of the new Education Council is maintained and that it remains at arm's length from Welsh Government interference.
"It is also essential that if education professionals are to be included in the new registration process then youth workers involved in education provision are also able to register, and I am disappointed that the Education Minister has avoided tackling this issue for so long".
