Liberal Youth Wales going from strength to strength

IR Cymru (Liberal Youth Wales) are celebrating the success of their recent freshers' fair recruitment campaign after having nearly trebled the number of members over the beginning of the new academic year.

Ieuenctid Rhyddfrydol Cymru, which stands for Liberal Youth in Welsh, attended seven campuses across Wales during the beginning of the university year, pushing membership of the youth wing of the Welsh Liberal Democrats from 88 to 250.

IR Cymru signed up the most number of members in Aberystwyth University with 33 students joining and 26 young people joined at the University of South Wales, Treforest campus.

IR Cymru successfully campaigned for new legislation to tackle homophobic bullying in Welsh schools with their 'Homophobia is Gay' campaign. They're now working for similar success with their campaigns for fairer fares on public transport for young people and ending hidden letting fees for students at university.

Sam Bennett, chair of IR Cymru said:

"Over the past few weeks, as we've been going around the freshers' fairs of Wales, we have nearly trebled our membership. It is an exciting time for us as a youth organisation involved in politics.

"The dedication of members in every corner of Wales has revitalised IR Cymru and shows that liberalism in young people in Wales is alive and kicking. This massive increase in membership is good news for the future of the Welsh Liberal Democrats"

Cadan ap Tomos, Campaign Officer, IR Wales, said:

"It's great to see so many young people supporting our campaigns for fairer fares on public transport and ending hidden letting fees. Our recruitment levels outstripped those of other political societies at the majority of our freshers' fairs and I'm excited that so many will be joining us to campaign to help tackle the problems that young people face in their everyday lives."

Kirsty Williams, leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, said:

"I am very impressed with the work of IR Cymru recruiting so many young members to the party. At a time when so many people are turned off by politics, it is quite an achievement to treble the membership of a political and campaigning organisation.

"IR Cymru play a very important part in giving young members a voice in the Welsh Liberal Democrats. I hope they continue to go from strength to strength."
