Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, Jane Dodds MP, has welcomed today’s vote in Parliament which requires a delay to Brexit until necessary UK legislation is passed.
Today’s vote in Parliament saw MPs back an amendment put forward by Oliver Letwin MP, which requires a delay to Brexit until necessary UK legislation is passed.
The vote was carried 322-306 – a majority of 16, and under the terms of the “Benn Act”, Prime Minister Boris Johnson is now bound by law to write a letter to the EU requesting an extension to Article 50.
Jane Dodds MP, Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats and MP for Brecon and Radnorshire, said:
“I am delighted that Parliament has voted to prevent a devastating no-deal Brexit, which would be hugely damaging for communities right across Wales.
“Crashing out of the EU without a deal would be unacceptable and reckless. The government’s own analysis has shown that it would be bad for jobs, bad for the environment, and bad for our NHS.
“Today’s vote sends a clear message to the Prime Minister: we do not want to leave without a deal. Mr Johnson must obey the law and request an extension to Article 50.”
