Liberal Democrat Leader Jo Swinson was one of the cross-party group of MPs who petitioned the court.

Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader Jane Dodds MP said:

A proper functioning democracy depends on the proper rule of law. No-one, including Boris Johnson is above the law. Today the court has agreed with us that proroguing Parliament to force through a no-deal Brexit is unacceptable.

The prorogation of Parliament was never more than a power grab. It was an authoritarian move by Boris Johnson designed to overrule and silence the people and their representatives and to force a disastrous no-deal Brexit on our country.

Now that this has been deemed unlawful Parliament must be recalled immediately and MPs allowed to debate this judgement and decide what happens next.

Boris Johnson is trampling on the very values and principles the United Kingdom was founded upon. The Liberal Democrats will continue to fight both in Parliament and in the courts to protect our democracy and stop a no-deal Brexit.
