The Welsh Liberal Democrats have criticised Gareth Bennett’s decision to join the Abolish the Welsh Assembly Party, highlighting the AMs appalling record.
Since being elected in 2016 Gareth Bennett sat at both a UKIP and an Independent AM, before announcing today that he was joining the Abolish the Welsh Assembly Party.
During his time as an AM he has made numerous transphobic and Islamophobic remarks and was leader of UKIP Wales’ Assembly Group for a short period of time.
Jane Dodds, Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, commented:
“Mr Bennett must learn to respect democracy. The Senedd is our National Parliament and it enjoys the confidence of the Welsh people, who have overwhelmingly back it in two referenda.
“If Mr Bennett devoted less of his efforts in trying to silence Wales’ voice, he would have more time to spend making our Parliament a better and more inclusive place. Sadly, he has chosen to spend his time using his position to espouse Islamophobic and transphobic bigotry.
“He is a disgrace to Welsh politics, and we hope the voters will consider his record next year - when they have the chance to vote him out and elect a hard working Welsh Liberal Democrat in Cllr Rodney Berman.”
