PrEP must now be made available in Wales, say Welsh Lib Dems

Commenting on the announcement that a clinical trial in England to provide HIV preventative drug PrEP on the NHS, Welsh Lib Dem Equalities Spokesperson Cadan ap Tomos said;

"Today's announcement is fantastic news for LGBT campaigners who have long campaigned for PrEP to be made available on the NHS. It's a positive step in the right direction.

"The fact that there is a drug clinically proven to be effective in preventing infection is still not available on the NHS in Wales is unthinkable. The drug can cut the risk of being infected by up to 86%.

"In August, Health Secretary Vaughan Gething AM said he would review the evidence available to him. Today's announcement from NHS England is testament to the strength of the evidence. Wales must now engage with this trial to learn from practice and understand how this drug can be made available to Welsh patients as soon as possible.

"Welsh Liberal Democrats stand with the LGBT community in calling for this life-saving drug to be made available to Welsh patients."
