New figures Show 38,500 EU citizens without Settled Status

The Welsh Liberal Democrats have warned that the Conservatives are failing to guarantee the rights of all 80,000 EU citizens in Wales, as new official figures show just 41,500 EU citizens in Wales had been given Settled Status by the end of November.

The Liberal Democrats have also raised concerns over the number of applicants receiving neither Settled or Pre-Settled Status.

Today’s figures show 361,900 people are still waiting for a decision across the UK, with 2,592,800 applications received but only 2,230,900 concluded.

Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader Jane Dodds commented:

EU nationals across Wales are rightly concerned about whether they will have the right to stay in our country. This is despite many of them filling vital roles in our health service and our schools. It’s disgraceful that the Conservative government is leaving them in legal limbo.

Boris Johnson has broken his promise to automatically guarantee the rights of EU citizens in law. This is leaving thousands of EU citizens set to miss out on Settled Status and exposing them to the Tories’ hostile environment.

The Welsh Liberal Democrats will continue to stand up for the rights of EU citizens and will fight to guarantee their right to live and work both in Wales and across the UK.
