Welsh Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for the Welsh Language, Aled Roberts, has welcomed today's Ministerial Statement outlining plans to improve attainment levels in Welsh as a second language after Key Stage 2. Currently, by Key Stage 4 about a third of learners do not achieve a recognised qualification in Welsh and many pupils choose to sit the short course in Welsh rather than the GCSE.
Commenting, Aled Roberts said:
"It is disappointing that the initial enthusiasm and interest pupils have for the Welsh language at Key Stage 2 is waning by Key Stage 4 and that too many Welsh learners do not have the confidence to use Welsh outside the classroom.
"I very much welcome the latest moves by the Welsh Government to try to reverse this trend by setting up a working group to consider potential changes to how Welsh is taught and assessed.
"Proposals which encourage the ability and confidence to use Welsh as a second language are to be supported and I look forward to receiving regular updates on the progress of the working group prior to their required report to the Minister in September 2013".
