Welsh Liberal Democrats welcome electrification announcement

July 16, 2012 9:24 AM

Commenting on the Secretary of State for Transport's announcement that the Great Western rail line is to be electrified between London and Swansea, Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, Kirsty Williams, said:

"I am delighted that the UK Coalition Government has recognised the benefits that electrification will bring to Wales. For thirteen years the Labour Government offered Wales virtually nothing with regards to transport infrastructure, which led to Wales being the only European nation, besides Albania, without a single mile of electrified railway. Following today's announcement, the Coalition Government has ensured that two thirds of the population of Wales will be on an electrified train route.

"This transformational investment gives Wales the opportunity to create a competitive market that will allow us to be able to compete with the rest of the UK.

Eluned Parrott, Shadow Minister for Transport, commented:

"I very much welcome today's announcement. An integrated and effective transport system is crucial if we are to get our economy moving again.

"The Coalition Government's announcement will also be a huge boost to some of our most deprived areas in Wales. For too long many have been allowed to feel isolated and unable to easily access services and work, this announcement will go a long way in helping people that have been struggling".
