Aled Roberts portraitWelsh Liberal Democrat Education Spokesperson Aled Roberts has welcomed the Review of Qualifications launched today and has stressed the importance of qualifications as valuable tools for life, not simply the results of a "tick-box exercise".

Commenting, Aled Roberts said:

"It is extremely important that the views of those involved in education and employment in Wales are included in this consultation.

"Education and qualifications are about preparing young people for their futures: for working life, the possibility of college or university, and even for dealing with the practicalities of day-to-day adult life.

"Young people, their teachers and prospective employers need to have confidence in our education system and fully understand the value of the resulting qualifications.

"I firmly believe that simply training pupils to pass a particular test is counter-productive and does very little to equip young people for life.

"I very much welcome the opportunity to have a proper debate on this subject as we also need to consider the full implications of any over-arching new qualification and the possibility of divergence between Welsh qualifications and those in the other nations of the UK.

"I would urge people to ensure they make their views known to the Welsh Government by contributing to this consultation."
