Eluned Parrott AM sees mixed picture in unemployment statistics

March 14, 2012 12:49 PM

Responding to unemployment statistics released today, Shadow Business Minister for the Welsh Liberal Democrats Eluned Parrott said

"The unemployment figures show a mixed picture with the employment rate up 0.7% in Wales to 68.4% and the unemployment rate up by 0.5%. Thankfully, there are positive signs such as a 2.8% increase in Finance employment which shows that some rebalancing of the economy is taking place. However Wales still lags behind the UK average by some margin.

"Part time work has also increased by 1.9% , however whilst part-time work can provide flexibility, which is particularly helpful to parents and people with caring responsibilities, it's important that there are also high quality full time opportunities that will help people develop meaningful careers.

"Of particular concern are the employment figures for 16 and 17 year olds which have reduced by 19.3% since July 2007. I am pleased with the Young Recruits Programme we negotiated within the budget that will provide 1800 new apprenticeship places to help tackle this.

"I would call on The Welsh Government to set and publish numerical targets for the economic development of Wales to help drive forward progress"
