Ceredigion's Welsh Liberal Democrat MP Mark Williams has welcomed the Government's proposals for reform of the House of Lords, pointing out during a statement by Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg that UK-wide elections would end the dominance of the second chamber by Peers from London and the South-East. The Government last week published a White Paper and Draft Bill on Lords Reform, which set out options for reform of the second chamber, with at least 80% to be elected.

Commenting, Mark Williams said:

"After many years of inaction it is very good to finally see movement towards an elected second chamber.

"These proposals will finally ensure that we have an elected second chamber, that can provide an important check on legislation.

"Currently, there is a bias towards Peers being from London and the South-East, but with elections across the UK we can ensure that there are Welsh peers who can represent our interests."
