Education Minister’s clear admission of failure – Randerson

Responding to the announcement made by Labour-Plaid Education Minister Leighton Andrews, Jenny Randerson, Welsh Liberal Democrat Shadow Education Minister said:

"This statement today, which has had to be prised out the Education Minister, is a response to two damning reports and it is clearly an admission of failure by the Labour-led administration over the past decade.

"While we welcome these changes, many of which have been championed by the Welsh Liberal Democrats for years, the great shame is that thousands of children in Wales have already been let down by Labours education system.

"It is very disappointing that the Labour-Plaid government doesnt even address the £604 spending gap between English and Welsh pupils. While funding in itself wouldnt be a cure-all solution to our education problems, we know that resources to school make a difference to pupils learning experience. Welsh Liberal Democrats would introduce a Pupil Premium which would target those most at risk from poor literacy which has been linked to high youth unemployment in Wales and longer term social issues."
