Education and Young People

The Welsh Labour Government is failing our children and young people. From an unambitious schools system slipping down international league tables to a university system starved of cash, Labour's poverty of ambition is holding our children back and eroding their opportunity to get on in life.

The Welsh Liberal Democrats want to build a fairer society and create opportunity for every young person. Our vision is for schools that give every child the best possible start in life, and high-quality universities that every young person has the opportunity to access.

Despite not being part of the Welsh Government, we've secured £282m for the poorest pupils in Wales to help close the attainment gap between them and their peers, and extended support to under 5s to help them in those crucial early years.

But we want to go further. The Welsh Liberal Democrats will:

  • Double our Pupil Premium investment to £2,500 per pupil, putting extra effort into helping our poorest pupils and give every child the best opportunity in life
  • Ensure schools adapt their learning experiences to each child by introducing individual pupil monitoring
  • Create a Student Living Support Grant for students from Wales, making sure living costs don't stop any young person from going to university
