Commenting on today’s inflation figures Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats Jane Dodds MS stated:
“Today’s figures show that the UK Conservative Government is utterly failing to tackle the cost of living crisis. With a combination of skyrocketing heating costs, rising food and transport costs and other increases, many families across Wales will be left struggling to cope this winter.
“The Conservatives' cruel cut to universal credit will have made this significantly worst for many households across Wales, especially with the unacceptably high poverty levels throughout Wales.
“I am grateful for the Welsh Government’s announcement earlier this week to provide households on universal credit and other working-age benefits a £100 one-off payment this winter to help with fuel bills, among other measures, but for many it will simply not be enough.
“The Welsh Government urgently needs more support from Westminster to help struggling families through this difficult time. The Conservatives must abandon their ideology of austerity and embrace investing in people if we are to see real social mobility and poverty reduction in Wales.”
