Childcare support must start from end of parental leave

The Welsh Liberal Democrats have today reiterated their calls for free childcare support to start from the end of paid parental leave.

Figures published today have shown that the number of parents taking advantage of a free childcare offer has been lower than expected, new figures show.

Under the Welsh Government’s plans, working parents of three and four-year-olds are expected to get 30 hours free childcare a week.

Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, Jane Dodds, commented:

Time and time again the Welsh Lib Dems have made the case that free childcare should start from the end of paid parental leave.

An offer of 30 hours free childcare may sound good on the face of it, but what use is that to people who are having to go back to work after nine months?

There is a black hole in government support for families from the end of parental leave to when their child gets a subsidised place. The Welsh Liberal Democrats remain the only party whose policy is to offer free childcare to help parents as soon as paid parental leave ends.
