Brendan D'Cruz: Email #3

Dear/Annwyl x,

I hope this third email finds you well. I’m Brendan D’Cruz, and I’m hoping that you will give me your first preference to lead the South Wales East list in the Senedd elections in May 2021.

Dw i’n gobeithio eich bod chi’n ddiogel ac yn iach. Fy enw i yw Brendan D’Cruz a dw i’n gobeithio fe wnewch chi fy enwebi fel eich dewis cyntaf i arwain rhestr De Dwyrain Cymru yn etholiadau y Senedd, Mai 2021.

We’re not just building homes, we’re rebuilding communities …

Housing is an area that I am passionate about, having spent the last few years working on business transformation projects at Newport City Homes. What resonated the most is that we have so many vulnerable people in our communities that rely on housing providers and support services to give them a roof over their heads and keep them safe and well. We must build more social housing and affordable homes that are energy efficient to help reduce carbon emissions. We need to regenerate our communities and our high streets, create sustainable jobs, invest in a greener future. Why can’t we use our waste plastics in building materials or to resurface our roads? And why do we have so many people economically inactive when there is so much opportunity to help make our communities better? It was amazing how quickly homeless people were housed when the pandemic started, so why can’t that be the case all the time?

Dyn ni’n ail-adeiladu cymunedau yn ogystal â thai …

Dw i’n angerddol iawn am broblemau cartrefol, sydd, i raddau, yn ganlyniad o weithio ar brosiectau i wella busnes dros Newport City Homes. Y peth wnaeth fy nharo i oedd faint o bobl fregus sydd yn ein cymuned sydd yn dibynnu ar gwmniau tai a gwasanaethau cymorth er mwyn cael tô dros eu pennau ac i gadw’n ddiogel ac yn iach. Mae rhaid i ni adeiladu mwy o gartrefi sydd yn agored i bawb ac yn well am yr amgylchedd. Mae angen i ni atgyfodi ein cymunedau, creu mwy o swyddi hir-dymor a chreu amgylchedd iachach i bawb. Pam na allen ni ddefnyddio gwastraff plastig yn ein adnoddau adeiladu ac wrth drwsio’r heolydd? A pham oes cymaint o bobl ddi-waith ac anactif pan mae cymaint o gyfleoedd ar gael i helpu gwella ein cymunedau? Roedd yn ryfeddol i weld pa mor gyflym lwyddon ni i ddarganfod tai i bobl ddi-gartre pan ddechreuodd y pandemig, felly pam nad oedd hwn yn digwydd yn y lle cyntaf?

Yma dych chi’n gallu darllen rhai o’r argymhellion yma:

When I was an academic, I taught Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship. I was Co-Chair of the Heads of the Valleys Green Skills Forum that was looking at creating green jobs and apprenticeships in South Wales, including investing in a Centre for Applied Innovative and Sustainable Technologies like the one in West Wales. I still think we should do this. For too long our area has been neglected, yet we have major industrial and manufacturing companies located here that are crucial to the economic success of the whole of Wales. There are lots of small enterprises and micro businesses crying out for investment and support, and lots of entrepreneurial people that could capitalise on new opportunities with a little more support. We need to build the South Wales Metro and help more people to get to work. And we must never raise people’s expectations then let them down, as the Senedd did with the aborted Circuit of Wales project.

Yn ystod fy mywyd academaidd, fe addysgais i Ddatblygiad Cynaliadwy a Dinasyddiaeth Byd-Eang. Ro’n i’n gyd-cadeirydd ar gyfer y fforwm ‘Head of The Valleys Green Skills’ oedd yn ffocysi ar greu swyddi a phrentisiaethau yn Ne Cymru, yn cynnwys buddsoddiad i greu Canolfan am Arloesedd a Thechnoleg Cynaliadwy fel yr un sydd yng Ngorllewin Cymru. Dw i dal yn teimlo’n gryf dylwn ni symud ymlaen gyda’r prosiect yma. Am gyfnod llawer rhy hir, mae ein ardal wedi cael ei anwybyddu, er bod nifer o gwmniau cynyrch pwysig iawn yma sy’n hanfodol i lwyddiant economaidd Cymru. Mae llwyth o gwmniau bach yn erfyn buddsoddiadau a chymorth, a gallai sawl entrepreneur gymryd mantais ar gyfloedd newydd gyda tipyn bach o gymorth tu ôl iddynt. Mae’n bwysig, hefyd, i ni beidio codi gobeithion y gymuned dim ond i adael nhw i lawr, fel wnaeth y Senedd gyda’r prosiect Cylchffordd Cymru.

Why should you choose me?

To be honest, I was reluctant for the selection contest to be restarted at this time. I first applied over two years ago at which point I was the only applicant, but for various reasons the selection process did not progress. Now it’s a summer like no other and with the backdrop of the national Lib Dem Leadership contest happening, the pandemic still raging and so many people worried about their livelihoods, politics might not be the biggest thing on people’s minds. It’s hard for anybody to cut through the background noise at this time. I believe the Lib Dems need to be radical, bold and different to convince voters that they should vote for us and not the other parties.

My circumstances are not the same as they were two years ago, but I fully understand the need to be pushing forward with candidates for the 2021 Senedd campaign. There’s not a great deal of campaigning time left. My local party is the South Wales East Valleys Lib Dems and it has half the South Wales East constituencies in it. It may not have as many members or resources as other local parties, but there is no doubting the commitment of those who do campaign in these areas. They want a representative in the Senedd that knows their challenges and who can really represent them. As a BAME candidate, I also know there are large numbers of ethnic minority voters who want a representative that can relate to them. And as somebody who has always been passionate about diversity, I know there are many people such as with disabilities and in the LGBTQ+ community who want to make sure that their voice is heard, that their interests will not be forgotten.

I would like to be that voice. Please choose me to lead the South Wales East list.

None of us is as good as all of us, working together.

Pam ddylwch chi ddewis fi?

I fod yn hollol onest, roedd cymysgedd o deimladau gyda fi ynglŷn a’r etholiad yn digwydd nawr. Dechreuais i’r broses yma dwy flynedd yn ôl ac, ar y pryd, fi oedd yr unig ymgeisydd ac am ba bynnag rheswm, aeth y broses o ddewis ddim ymlaen. Nawr, yn ystod amser holl ddigynsail, tra bod yr etholiad genedlaethol dros arweinydd y Democratiaid yn digwydd, mae’r pandemig dal i fod ar flaen meddeyliau y rhan fwyaf o bobl, felly basai’n ddealladwy os nad ydy rhai yn teimlo’n holl fodlon i siarad am wleidyddiaeth ar hyn o bryd. Dw i’n teimlo’n gryf bod angen i’r Democratiaid fod yn ddewr, yn wahanol ac yn ddi-ofn i ddangos pobl pam ddylen nhw bleidleidio drostyn ni yn lle plaid arall.

Dyw fy amgylchiadau i ddim yr un peth ag oedden nhw dwy flynedd yn ôl, ond dw i’n deall yn glîr bod hi’n angenrheidiol i ni wthio ymlaen gydag’r ymgais am aelodaeth y Senedd yn 2021. Does dim llawer iawn o amser ar ôl i ymgeisio. Fy mhlaid lleol i yw Democratiaid Rhyddfrydol Cymoedd De Dwyrain Cymru ac mae hanner o etholaethau De Dwyrain Cymru gyda ni. Efallai does dim cymaint o aelodau neu adnoddau gyda ni â sydd gan bleidiau lleol eraill, ond does dim amheuaeth yr angerdd ac ymgrych sydd gan yr aelodau sy’n ymgyrchu yn yr ardaloedd yma. Maen nhw eisiau aelod yn y Senedd sy’n deall y heriau a phroblemau sy’n cael eu gwynebu. Fel ymgeisydd BAME, dw i’n gwybod bod nifer iawn o bleidleiswyr o lleiafridoedd ethnig sydd eisiau ymgeisydd sy’n eu deall. Fel rhywun sydd wastad wedi bod yn angerddol am barchu amrywiaeth, dw i’n ymwybodol bod nifer o bobl, fel y rheini sydd ag anabledd neu’r rheini yn y gymuned LGBTQ+ sydd eisiau teimlo’n sicr bod llais gyda nhw.

Dw i eisiau rhoi y llais yma iddyn nhw. Os gwelwch yn dda, dewiswch fi i arwain rhestr De Dwyrain Cymru.

Does dim un ohonon ni sy’n well na phawb yn gweithio gyda’n gilydd
