Eluned Parrott, Welsh Liberal Democrat Shadow Minister for the Economy and Transport has responded to the setting up of a steering group by the Welsh Government to look at ways of increasing the supply of, and demand for, Low Carbon Vehicles.
"The automotive industry already provides a substantial number of jobs in Wales and plays a significant part in our economy. This places us in an ideal position to take advantage of opportunities for green jobs through the development of low carbon transport.
"The Welsh Liberal Democrats have long been of the opinion that green jobs are the way forward to invigorate the manufacturing sector in Wales.
"In the past, the Welsh Labour Government has often set up advisory groups which then seem to disappear. That can't be the case here. Setting up an advisory group should be the beginning, not the end. I will be following the progress of this steering group with great interest.
"Increasing production of Low Carbon Vehicles and encouraging their use by providing adequate charging points will not only benefit the economy but also the environment. We must all look towards reducing our carbon footprint, but we need to make it practical for people to do so."
The steering group being set up by the Minister for Economy, Science and Transport Edwina Hart will be industry led and a progress report is expected before the end of the year.
