Welsh Lib Dems to fight Police and Crime Commissioner elections

The Welsh Liberal Democrats have announced their intention to stand candidates in the upcoming Police and Crime Commissioner elections, saying no other party offers a liberal approach to law and order.

The party did not stand any candidates in Wales during the 2012 PCC elections. Full details of the process to be used to select candidates will be announced in due course.

Kirsty Williams AM, Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, said:

“Welsh Liberal Democrats still don’t believe that power over our police forces should be concentrated in the hands of one person, and we remain committed to our vision of directly-elected police boards

“However, the fact remains that these posts exist. We as a party cannot let another election go by without candidates standing up for the open, free and tolerant society that the Liberal Democrats seek to achieve.

“Welsh Liberal Democrats will be standing in these elections as the only party with an effective, liberal, community-based approach to policing and tackling crime. We won’t stand by and allow the other parties to encroach on our freedoms and diminish our liberties.

“We believe rehabilitation is better than prison, that we must not pay for security with our liberties and freedoms, and that the war on drugs has well and truly failed. This strong liberal stance will give the people of Wales a clear reason to vote Welsh Lib Dem next May.”
