Welsh Lib Dems support calls for anti-HIV drug to made available on the Welsh NHS

The Welsh Liberal Democrats have welcomed a key report supporting its calls for an anti-HIV drug to be made available on the Welsh NHS.

A report published today (21st March) by Public Health Wales concludes that pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention is highly effective.

An Expert Panel was established by Welsh Government Ministers to consider the effectiveness of PrEP in HIV prevention among high risk individuals.

Commenting, Welsh Lib Dem Equalities Spokesperson Cadan ap Tomos, said;

“Today’s report is welcome news and I hope to see the commission’s findings acted upon by the government as soon as possible.

“In 2016 figures revealed that HIV diagnosis had reached a 15 year high, and we urged the government to take immediate action and to prioritise HIV prevention.

“The Welsh Liberal Democrats have long called for PrEP to be made available on the NHS in Wales for high risk individuals. We have been slow to react in Wales, but I am pleased that we are now making the necessary steps forward to improve prevention."
