Last night Cllr Amanda Jones won a by-election in Pontypridd with over 50% of the vote for the Welsh Liberal Democrats.
Amanda fought off challengers from both Labour and Plaid to win the Trallwn ward on Pontypridd Town Council. The ruling Labour party also failed to win another seat being contested at the same time, reducing their dominance on the Council.
The full result was:
Welsh Lib Dem Amanda Jones - 186 (52%)
Labour - 136 (38%)
Plaid - 35 (10%)
Newly-elected Cllr Amanda Jones said:
"Thank you to those who voted for me. I am looking forward to being a part of the Town Council and representing the people of the ward.
"Like many local residents I was very disappointed with the way in which RCT Council rode roughshod over local opinion with regard to the paddling pool. I was also annoyed that Pontypridd Town Council did absolutely nothing to prevent the destruction of such an historic part of our town.
"They are supposed to be our representatives yet the Labour dominated Council simply went along with their colleagues in RCT Cabinet."
Local Campaign Manager Karen Roberts added:
"It must be extremely frustrating for our opponents that despite all their efforts we keep coming back. We may have been down after May's elections but we are certainly not out. The fightback is on."
