Candidate for Delyn
Tom Rippeth lives in the Delyn constituency in the village of Northop. He works as a Professor of Ocean Physics at Bangor University.
Tom is also a keen cyclist who has helped raise thousands of pounds for charity through sponsored cycle rides over the years, including one with partner Linda from London to Northop (over 3 days in the snow of Easter 2013) which raised £2,500 for Kidney Research.
He is also well-known as a member of popular Flintshire Jazzband, Mad Ed’s Hot Five.
Prof Rippeth has never been elected to public office before, but doesn’t believe this to be a disadvantage in the upcoming election.
He says: “I am not, and have no intention of being, a career politician. However, I believe I have the experience necessary to help build a sustainable future here in North East Wales.
“In particular I will prioritise getting a fair deal for Flintshire residents and protecting and generating sustainable jobs across the county."
“An early target will be improving local transport links to help get Flintshire to work. For too long we have seen our taxes wasted on first class train and plane services to carry politicians to Cardiff, instead of being used to improve local transport links to help local people to get to work.”
“In the next decade it is also vitally important that we fight to protect local jobs from the uncertainty created by the threat of a referendum on exit from the EU.
“In order to ensure a sustainable future we need to ensure that the next generation leave school and college with the skills which will not only provide them with a fulfilling career, but will also plug the current skills gap which is acting to hold down growth in our region.”
