Candidate for Dwyfor Meirionydd
Steve Churchman is a seasoned campaigner, and a long standing member of the Liberal Party/Liberal Democrats since 1983. He has served for nine years as a London Borough Councillor and ten years as a Gwynedd County Councillor.
He brings a wealth of experience having worked for eighteen years in Railway Civil Engineering, serving as a Track Design Engineer for many of those years and since being made redundant twice in 1998 and 1999 and worked for the fifteen years as a shopkeeper and Subpostmaster in Garndolbenmaen until October 2014.
During his political career, Steve was part of a successful campaign against the overground route of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL) through east London, giving evidence on three occasions to Parliamentary Select Committees. In more recent times, Steve has presented evidence to the Welsh Governments’ Environment Committee on behalf of the Nuclear Free Local Authorities in connection with Wylfa B.
In Gwynedd, Steve represents Dolbenmaen ward, covering communities in Garndolbenmaen, Bryncir, Golan, Cwm Ystradllyn, Penmorfa, Pentrefelin and Treflys. He has been the Liberal Democrats’ Group Leader on Cyngor Gwynedd since March 2011. During his time as a Gwynedd Councillor, Steve has served as Chairman of the former Environment Committee and has chaired two scrutiny investigations on behalf of the council investigating Affordable Housing and more recently, education transport for college students.
Steve believes that the lack of decent employment opportunities is destroying Welsh heartland communities as young adults are forced to look to other locations for employment. Steve Churchman also believes that the old adage of “Tai Iaith Gwaith” must be central to the politics of Gwynedd and wants to see the creation of decent employment opportunities that can become the cohesive force that keeps local communities together.
