Scrap Healthcare Inspectorate Wales, says Kirsty Williams

Wales’ hospital inspectorate system isn’t fit for purpose and should be replaced, Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader Kirsty Williams has said today.

This follows a damning report into Glan Clwyd Hospital's Tawel Fan unit in Denbighshire which Kirsty Williams has described as a "scandal".

Kirsty Williams said scrapping Wales' health watchdog should be considered so that a new, more robust system could be established that is independent of the Welsh Government.

Kirsty Williams AM, Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats said:

“We need a robust, proactive and strong system of inspections in our hospitals that is independent from the Welsh Government. I do not feel the current system provides that.

“Healthcare Inspectorate Wales in its current form isn’t fit for purpose and has failed to provide the people of Wales with the reassurances that we all need.

“It is time we considered scrapping the current system and radically reforming it to ensure our NHS keeps people safe. We need a hospital inspection system that assures us our healthcare system is fit for purpose.

“The appalling report into the Tawel Fan unit showed that Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW) failed as the final backstop to ensure care was first class.

“All the mechanisms internally within the trust, and then externally, failed to provide the warning signs and the action that the patients, and the families of those patients, needed”.
