The Welsh Liberal Democrats have branded comments by Brexit Secretary David Davis that the UK won’t be “plunged into a Mad Max-style world borrowed from dystopian fiction” after Brexit absurd. These remarks show how expectations of the consequences of leaving the EU have changed since the referendum.
Brexit has brought about some unexpected moments and quotes, but this must be a new low. Before the referendum, it would have been unfathomable for any Government Minister to make a speech reassuring the world a policy they support won’t bring about the apocalypse.
Welsh Liberal Democrat Baroness Jenny Randerson commented:
The fact that David Davis, a man who has spent his political life fighting for Britain to leave the EU feels the need to confirm that Brexit won’t plunge the UK into a dystopian nightmare speaks volumes about the state of Brexit.
During the referendum Brexiters promised that leaving the EU would be a panacea, now they’re reduced to confirming that Brexit won’t bring about the end of society as we know it. This farcical situation would be hilarious if it wasn’t so important. Behind all this is the serious reality that Brexit will do irreparable damage to Wales and the UK.
If a Mad Max-style future is off the table, perhaps David Davis could tell us what dystopian model we’ll be following instead. Alternatively he can back the Liberal Democrat’s proposal to give the people the final say on the Brexit deal with the option to choose an exit from Brexit.
