Following figures released by Stonewall Cymru on the workplace discrimination faced by the LGBT community, the Welsh Liberal Democrats have condemned LGBT+ discrimination in all settings and urged political parties and employers to work together to end LGBT discrimination in the workplace.
The figures show that 34% of LGB and 45% of Trans employees have hid or disguised they’re LGBT at work, 16% of LGB and 30% of trans employees have been the target of negative comments or conduct from colleagues and 26% of bisexual employees aren’t out to anyone at work.
Welsh Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Equalities Cllr Rhys Taylor commented:
“Findings by Stonewall Cymru that more than a third of LGB workers and 45% of Trans workers in Wales hide their sexuality over fears of discrimination are absolutely heartbreaking.
“In a way it tells us what we already know. We've come far on LGBT+ rights and we're a more accepting and inclusive society than we were, but we have a very long way to go to create a truly equal society where everyone is free to live openly without fear of persecution.
“Wales can be proud that our National Assembly is the best LGBT+ employer in Britain, but we cannot rest until every workplace in Wales is as welcoming to LGBT+ employees. These figures should be a wake-up call to us all, and especially to those employers that sit back and allow this culture to fester.”
