The Welsh Liberal Democrats have reissued calls for an overhaul in healthcare inspection after the current watchdog admitted to an Assembly committee that they are under-resourced.
During a meeting of the Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee, Healthcare Inspectorate Wales Chief Executive Dr Kate Chamberlain said: “Am I adequatly resourced? The answer to that would have to be no. I would like to do more.”
The Welsh Liberal Democrats are calling for a new health watchdog, completely independent of Government meddling. If you agree with our calls, add your name to our petition by clicking here.
Kirsty Williams AM, Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, said:
“This is no great surprise – HIW have admitted before that they’re not able to inspect as many hospitals as they’d like, and the number of deep-rooted scandals coming to a head shows that the situation our NHS is in is far from perfect.
“We need a wholesale change in the way we inspect our health services. Welsh Liberal Democrats want to start from scratch with new health watchdog that’s completely independent of meddling by Labour ministers, properly resourced and able to do its job without fear of repercussions. Only then can we begin to have confidence that our hospitals are properly inspected.”
