Purpose of Job

To maximise the impact of the Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Group in its communication with staff, Members and the wider public using the full range of communication tools as well as in broadcast, print and other media.

Main Duties

  1. To establish and maintain constructive working relationships with the press, broadcast and online media.
  1. Research, prepare and write press releases, statements to the media
  2. To liaise with AMs, their staff and group staff to identify any aspects of their work which may be of interest to the media and maintain a forward planning system to identify future communications activity.
  3. Contribute to a programme of speeches, press conferences, photo opportunities, broadcast opportunities and other events to promote the Welsh Liberal Democrat group.
  4. Ensure the smooth running of the press office systems and maintain an effective 24/7 media monitoring system, covering print, broadcast and online media.
  5. To liaise with key stakeholders in coordinating the Group's communication strategy (including stakeholders within Westminster, Local Government, and at local party level).
  6. To ensure full use of new media is made and that website, blog, video, picture and email content are developed.
  7. To ensure an up to date media contact database is maintained.
  8. To promote excellence and professionalism in all group communication activities.

Person Specification

Essential Knowledge and Experience

  • Experience of working effectively within the written press, broadcast or online industry, or public relations sector.
  • Knowledge and understanding of media handling techniques and delivering a communications plan.
  • Understanding of the need to reflect the views of the Group in a manner which reflects equal opportunity and is not inflammatory, insensitive, libelous, slanderous or defamatory.

Essential Qualifications

  • Degree or equivalent in a relevant subject.

Essential Skills and Behaviours

  • Proven evidence of first class written and oral communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate the work of the group.
  • Ability to work flexibly on own initiative to tight deadlines.
  • Excellent organisation, planning and presentational skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships across professional boundaries with media and other stakeholders.
  • Effective IT Skills particularly using Microsoft packages such as Word, Outlook and Excel.
  • Ability to demonstrate sensitivity and ensure that the highest standards of confidentiality are upheld.
  • An understanding of the values of the Liberal Democrats, with the ability to generate ideas for news items which reflect the work and values of the Group.

Desirable

  • An understanding of current affairs and issues of relevance to Wales, an interest in the Welsh political system.
  • The ability to work in both Welsh and English.
