“All pupils should expect an excellent education” – Aled Roberts

Commenting on today's Welsh Conservative debate in the Assembly, Aled Roberts, Welsh Liberal Democrat Education Spokesperson said:

"We should be aiming for excellence in ALL our schools, ensuring that ALL pupils receive an education that will enable them to reach their full potential, and at the same time providing them with the skills they will need to be fully equipped for the future.

"I believe, as a principle, that there is no difficulty in pupils of all abilities achieving their potential under the current system as long as the proper processes are in place to keep standards high.

"The recent Review of Qualifications gave us a clear indication of the way forward if we are to raise standards in schools in Wales, and I would expect to see measures put in place to make sure that the recommendations within that review are effectively implemented.

"However, in August this year the Welsh Conservatives announced that they wanted to bring back the "best elements" of grammar schools and that fact is of concern to me, particularly when considering the academic and vocational emphasis from them in today's debate.

"The ingredients for an excellent school can't be created by a nameplate - there are brilliant schools that are not grammar schools or academies.

"Our challenge is to improve leadership and teaching in all schools - and we believe funding and freedoms should be given fairly to all schools, not just to a favoured minority".
