“Welsh Government’s approach has failed Wales’ children” says Aled Roberts

June 20, 2013 10:31 AM

Following today's news that children in Wales are struggling to do basic sums, Aled Roberts, Welsh Liberal Democrat AM for North Wales and Shadow Minister for Education in the Assembly said:

"Today's report from Estyn is the latest in a long line of reports showing that the Welsh Government's approach is failing Wales' children.

"Why is it that pupils in half of Wales' secondary schools and 40% of primary schools have weak numeracy skills?

"It is a great shame that after all this time the Welsh Labour Government is still insisting that restructuring is the best way forward to improve children's basic education.

"The real debate needs to be about standards not structures. The Welsh Government needs to set out what will be done for those children who will have already lost out before any long term plans to deal with the literacy and numeracy deficit come to fruition.

"Thirteen years of Welsh Labour in charge of education in Wales hasn't added up to much."
