Buy Best, Buy Local – William Powell AM

February 19, 2013 4:02 PM

William Powell AM, Welsh Liberal Democrat Rural Affairs Spokesperson, has today stressed the value; quality and importance of local Welsh meat produce in the wake of the present Horsemeat scandal.

William Powell, Welsh Liberal Democrat Member for Mid and West Wales, said:

"In recent weeks we have seen what initially appeared to be an isolated case of contamination in the Republic of Ireland, become a pan-European scandal.

While I commend the swift action taken by the UK Government and the support offered by the Welsh Government; it is clear that a historic network of criminality and wrong doing has been exposed. This must be addressed at the European level and I warmly welcome the steps which are being taken in advance of next week's EU Agriculture Council meeting.

I also welcome the apparent conversion of DEFRA Secretary of State the Rt. Hon. Owen Patterson to understanding the imperative to deal with this kind of international crime in a robust pan European way.

This scandal has clearly demonstrated the value of a short and transparent food chain and ensuring that the very best quality meat produce is available for sale on the shelves of our supermarkets and in the cases of our butchers.

Welsh red meat produce leads the world in both its quality and the transparency of its supply chain. In light of this recent scandal I welcome moves from all sides in advocating Welsh meat, and I am convinced that consumer confidence can - and must- be maintained in the present climate."
