Welsh Liberal Democrats to vote against chewing gum levy

William Powell, Shadow Minister for Environment, has today confirmed that the Welsh Liberal Democrats will be voting against the proposed introduction of a 5p chewing gum levy.

William Powell, Assembly Member for Mid and West Wales, commented:

"While the Welsh Liberal Democrats accept that chewing gum litter is an issue in many communities, we have not seen strong evidence that the problem would diminish by merely bumping up the price of chewing gum by five pence.

"Over the past few years we have already seen action on this issue in the form of the Chewing Gum Action Group, working alongside the Welsh Government, which appears to have enjoyed considerable success in addressing the problem. Of course more work must be done to keep our streets clean, but this has to be through enforcement of existing litter legislation. In addition, we emphasise the importance of education rather than penalising everyone who buys chewing gum indiscriminately, no matter if they litter or not."
