Cautious welcome for new environment body - William Powell AM

November 29, 2011 3:50 PM

William Powell AM, Welsh Liberal Democrat Shadow Minister for the Environment and Sustainability has given a cautious welcome to the statement issued today by Environment Minister John Griffiths that the Environment Agency, Countryside Council for Wales and Forestry Commission Wales will be merged into a new Wales wide Environmental body.

William Powell said:

"The Welsh Liberal Democrats welcome the announcement in principle of the merger of CCW, the Environment Agency Wales and the Forestry Commission. As always, the devil will be in the detail . We will wait to hear the proposals in more detail from the Welsh Government and to scrutinise the business case in detail . In addition, we call upon the Welsh Government to conduct a full consultation, not only amongst stakeholders, but also the wider Welsh public. It is paramount that any new body continues the good work of the three predecessor organisations and that the protection and nurturing of our environment is the driving force of any new body."

Notes:

The Welsh Liberal Democrats have previously called for the merger of EA Wales, CCW and the Forestry Commission so that savings in backroom functions can be realised.
