Health Minister must be accountable for the way our NHS is delivered and not pass the buck to LHBs

At the Welsh NHS Confederation's annual conference, the Health Minister this afternoon warned NHS managers they must meet strict targets or face the consequences. She told officials they must meet performance and financial goals.

Responding to the Health Minister's warning to LHBs at the NHS Confederation annual conference, Kirsty Williams, Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats said:

"It's all well and good for the Health Minister to issue edicts and bark orders at LHBs to meet clinical and financial targets but will the Health Minister take the responsibility if LHBs can't break even or if they fail to meet clinical standards for Welsh patients? She has warned that there will be consequences for poor performance. What I want to know is will the Health Minister apply the same standards to her own ability to run our NHS?

"We are starting to see the Labour Government push the responsibility of running our National Health Service on individual LHBs. When targets are missed and when they fail to meet financial objectives, the LHBs are to blame but the Labour Government will jump at the chance to take the glory for any good news.

"The Health Minister needs to make up her mind, and quickly, about her role as Minister with responsibility for our NHS. She needs to be accountable for the way our NHS is delivered and not pass the buck. She can't have her cake and eat it."
