Welsh Liberal Democrats welcome S4C- BBC deal

The Welsh Liberal Democrat Heritage Spokesperson, Peter Black has welcomed the deal between the BBC and S4C that guarantees the independence of the channel under the new arrangements.

The deal ensures that every member of the S4C Authority will have to go through a public appointments procedure and that this process will involve the Welsh Government.

The BBC have agreed that it is not appropriate that they sit on the S4C Management Team, though this body will have quarterly meetings with BBC management so as to ensure that they are able to scrutinize and monitor the way the channel is run.

In addition the BBC has guaranteed its funding package for S4C and has said that any change to the operating agreement will be subject to public consultation.

"I very much welcome this package which is in line with the demands we passed at the Welsh Liberal Democrat Conference and the amendment we tabled at the Welsh Assembly last week," said Mr. Black. "I believe that in the circumstances this is the best possible package for the Welsh channel, that it will ensure its continued independence and offer stability of funding for some time to come.

"Welsh Liberal Democrat MPs and Peers have worked very hard to push the government and the BBC towards this settlement. We hope that it will enable S4C to put its problems behind it and get on with the job of providing high quality Welsh language programming."
