WASTE WATCHERS - Day 19

April 22, 2011 3:44 PM

The Welsh Liberal Democrats will expose an example of the waste and inefficiency of Labour and Plaid Cymru in government on each day of the Welsh general election campaign

Nigel HowellsIt was revealed last October that Wales won just £570,000 worth of Tier One Olympic Contracts compared to £17 million for Northern Ireland and £22 million for Scotland. Freedom of Information requests placed by the Welsh Liberal Democrats revealed that there had been no written correspondence between the Welsh Ministers and the Olympic Delivery Authority in the last three years.

Welsh firms are missing out on multi million pound Olympic contracts as the Scottish and Northern Irish governments leave Wales trailing.

The Minister for Economy and Transport, Plaid Cymru's Ieuan Wyn Jones, wrote to his Northern Ireland counterpart bemoaning Wales' lack of success, stating 'The amount of Welsh companies who have successfully won business via the CompeteFor Portal is lower than we hoped'. However, Ieuan Wyn Jones had not written to the ODA himself.

Nigel Howells, Cardiff Central Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Candidate said:

"Throughout the Welsh General Election campaign, we are highlighting the waste and incompetence of the Labour-Plaid government over the last four years. Today, we are exposing the wasted opportunity of the Labour-Plaid government as they failed to promote Welsh businesses to the Olympic Delivery Authority to win multi-million pound contracts.

"I was shocked to discover that there has been no correspondence from Welsh Ministers to the Olympic Delivery Authority regarding these contracts. Why didn't Welsh ministers write to Lord Coe, just as the Minister of Enterprise for Northern Ireland had done?

"This is clearly a wasted opportunity for the struggling businesses of Wales. It should have been a priority for ministers to help land Olympic contracts but it seems the Labour-Plaid Government was not standing up for Wales."
