Sadly, on Wednesday night, Lord Livsey of Talgarth (Richard Livsey), former MP for Brecon and Radnorshire and Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats died peacefully at home.

Kirsty Williams AM, Leader of Welsh Liberal Democrats said:

"Richard Livsey was a man of immense honour and decency who was loved and respected by his constituents, colleagues and by politicians of all parties.

"He will be remembered particularly as a champion for the rural communities in which he lived and an expert on agriculture, which he worked in all his professional life.

"As Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, he was a passionate advocate for Welsh devolution. His role in achieving a 'Yes' vote in the 1997 referendum establishing the National Assembly for Wales will be long remembered. I know how much he was looking forward to campaigning for another yes vote in next year's referendum.

'His famous by-election victory in 1985 marked a rebirth of Liberalism in Wales and all of us who have been elected in Wales since owe him a great debt of gratitude.

'He inspired me to join the Liberal Democrats at 15 and was a key guide stone and mentor as I fought my first election in Brecon and Radnorshire in 1999 and ever since. His death comes as a real shock to me and I know to his friends and family who held him in such high regard.'
