Bus passes must remain key priority - Randerson

Commenting on pressure from the Labour/Plaid Government's Transport Advisory Group to end free bus passes for all elderly people, Welsh Lib Dem Shadow Transport Minister, Jenny Randerson AM said:

"Bus passes were a key achievement of the Lib Dem Partnership Government during the first Assembly, and have been an unprecedented success. This is more than an issue about transport. The scheme provides numerous benefits for elder people based on the freedom that it provides. It also has numerous wellbeing and environmental benefits. It has also stimulated the use of public transport which has clear benefits for people of all ages.

"Announcements like this make it very clear that Government Officials are panicking about the spending squeeze that Ministers are refusing to come clean on. It is time they were honest with the people about what is happening.

"In terms of bus passes, it is our view that they are a key priority. With the amount of money this Government spends on roads, it should be relatively easy to find the money to keep this scheme going."
