Bring Northern Ireland's Restorative Justice to Wales - Willott

November 2, 2009 8:42 AM

Commenting on Thursday Prison Reform Trust report, which callsfor the youth justice system to prioritise restorative justice, whereby young offenders face their victims, Jenny Willott, Welsh Liberal Democrat MP for Cardiff Central, said:

"This report shows just how effective restorative justice can be. We need this in Wales.

"In Northern Ireland, reoffending levels were nearly halved by getting young people to face up to the consequences of their actions. What'smore, in 9 out of 10 cases, the victims were happy with the outcome.

"The Liberal Democrats have often been accused by Labour and the Tories of being soft on crime for supporting restorative justice. But there is nothing soft about finding a way actually to cut crime levels and support the victims of crime.

"The Government must get over its obsession with sounding tough and do what actually works to cut crime. A good start would be to make restorative justice available across the whole of Wales."
