Ed Townsend

Newport West

Ed has lived in Newport for 20 years and has been the Councillor for St Julian’s ward since 2004. He was deputy leader of the council from 2008 until 2011 and continues to campaign on behalf of local people.

He spent four years as Newport’s cabinet member for economic regeneration and played a leading role in attracting Admiral Insurance to a new city centre building with the prospect of 1200 people working there.

Ed was the Lib Dem candidate in Newport East at the 2005 and 2010 general elections, pushing to within 1600 votes of winning the seat.

Ed trained as a journalist on Merseyside and worked for the Birkenhead News, Daily Post and Daily Mail before moving to Wales as head of corporate relations for BT.

He was director of communications for the Welsh Liberal Democrats before building the party’s campaigning team in Newport.

Ed’s political interests now centre round improvements in the health service and the economy, with the emphasis on jobs and transport.
