The Welsh Liberal Democrats are delivering for Wales' poorest children. We've managed to secure £282 million in funding for our flagship Pupil Premium to support pupils from deprived backgrounds with reading and numeracy skills. Since we first secured this money, teachers have told us just how much of a difference it makes to the children who need it most. Higher reading levels, fewer children skipping school, a narrower attainment gap - all because of the Welsh Liberal Democrats.
We want to go further. We want to double our Pupil Premium investment to £2,500 per pupil. We will continue to expand the Pupil Premium until we reach our target, putting extra effort into helping our poorest pupils and give every child the best opportunity in life. In addition we will ensure that schools are provided with comprehensive guidance on how they can best use the Pupil Premium money and that they are accountable for their spending.
How did you establish the Pupil Premium?
Although Welsh Liberal Democrats aren’t in Government in Wales, we secured funding worth £282 million for our flagship Pupil Premium through the Welsh Government’s budgets – we’ve sought to expand the fund year on year, from £450 in 2012, to £1,150 in 2016.
Why is the Pupil Premium important?
A world class education system is essential to break down the unfair divisions in our society, and to ensure a productive and world-beating economy. Too many people have their chances in life determined by who their parents were, rather than by their own efforts and abilities. With our Pupil Premium, investing in children who might otherwise fall behind, we are finally tackling the scandalous gap in exam results between rich and poor. But we must do even more.
How much is the Pupil Premium worth?
From September, all schools in Wales will receive £1,050 per child on free school meals - rising to £1,150 next year. For the first time, we're also extending this Grant to under 5s to make sure our children get the best possible start in life. You can see how much your school is getting here.
